  • Program Introduction

    Geology is a knowledge system that studies material compositions, internal structure and external features of earth, mutual interactions between earth s and the history of the evolution of earth. The first-level discipline of Geology complies of five second-level disciplines of Mineralogy-Petrology-Gitology, Geochemistry, Structural Geology, Palaeontology & Stratigraphy and Quaternary Geology. The researches of our Geological disciplines mainly characterized in that of the structure and property of a basin, the depositional systems and sedimentary effects, the physical, chemical or biological effects which occurred inside the sedimentary basin, and how these geological effects control the deposition and formation of fossil fuels. During 1950s, with the help of experts from the Soviet Union, the geological department began to recruit graduate students, and in early 1980s, authorized by the Chinese government and became one of the first departments to offer master degrees, and later to establish doctoral programs in Mineralogy, Petrology and Gitology in 1993, Geochemistry in 2003, Structural Geology in 2005. In 2003, approved by the National Ministry of Personnel, our department established the Post-doctoral Research Station in Geology. In 2006, we were authorized to offer doctor degree in Geology discipline.

    The Doctoral Research Station of Mineralogy, Petrology and Gitology mainly researches on the areas of Sedimentology of Sedimentary Basins, Petroleum Reservoir Geology, Sequence Stratigraphy, Logging Geology, Mineralogy, Petrology and other subjects. This station has formed its distinctive features in four research directions: Sedimentology & Lithofacies Palaeogeography, Petroleum Reservoir Geology & Fluid Minerals of Sedimentary Basins, Sequence Stratigraphy & Logging Geology and Applied Mineralogy, Petrology & Measurement Techniques. The researches in Sedimentology & Sequence Stratigraphy, Petroleum Reservoir Geology, Logging Geology, Lithofacies Palaeogeography and Lithologic Reservoirs Predictions are closely associated with Chinese petroleum industries. In exploration and production of Tarim Oilfield, Ordos Gas Field and Jiyang Depression Lithologic Reservoir, they have played an important role. Our research achievements in this field have been on the domestic leading level, and part of them even in the international advanced positions.

    The Doctoral Research Station of Geochemistry is characterized by studying the behaviors of organic matters in the earthcrust with a variety of experimental methods and means, relating as far as the chemical origin of life on the earth, the carbon cycles in different systems in the earth, also relating to theories on the generation of fossil fuels and resource assessments and a series of geochemical problems with respect to the identification of aggregated molecular chemicals and the formation of fossil fuels. The main research areas include: the formation and distribution of oil and gas, quantitative analysis of oil and gas accumulation process, the historic analysis of reservoir fluid, reservoir geochemistry, geochemical record of geological events, gas and isotopes geochemistry and environmental geochemistry. The main directions of training aim at the prediction of oil and gas generating mechanism and distribution, organic geochemistry and environmental geochemistry. The laboratory of this unit is certified by the national metrology organization and is equipped with a fairly comprehensive analyzing and testing technological system which contains more than 20 sets of large analyzing instruments and which is mainly used for analyzing molecular compounds of rocks, soil, water and air samples. Meanwhile, the laboratory is a key national laboratory of Oil and Gas Resource & Propecting. It is also an important part of China University of Petroleum (Beijing). It enjoys high reputation in biomarker testing, microscopic component analysis, fluid history analysis and reservoir fluid geochemistry measurement.

    Structural Geology is one of the basic disciplines of Geology. It mainly focuses researches on tectonic deformation of rocks, rock stratum and rock mass in the lithosphere, including geometry, kinematics and dynamics of structural deformation. The Structural Geology discipline is characterized by studying structural geology related to sedimentary basins and solving structural geological problems with respect to oil and gas exploration. The Structural Geology Lab is equipped with comprehensive experiment table of simulating sandbox of structural deformation, workstation of interpretation of seismic data, the equipment and software relating to the calculation of stress field, analyzing the balanced sections, the history of basin residence, history of deformation modeling analysis. We undertake 973 national special thematic projects, national natural science foundation projects, and various oil field research projects. We have a group of young and middle-aged professors and external academicians as doctoral supervisors of structural geology, having excellent environment for teaching and scientific researches. The doctoral program has two training directions of Regional Structure & Basin Analysis and Interpretation of Oil Region Structure.

    In China University of Petroleum-Beijing, the Geology discipline is a traditional dominant basic discipline closely related to the application of oil exploration. Led by Dr. Wang Tieguan, the academician, the research team has enormous potentiality in different research areas and has a reasonable academic echelon. They have brought up a number of senior talents, and have published some influential textbooks in the country, such as Sedimentary Petrology, Reservoir Geochemistry, and Oil and Basin Analysis. We have undertaken several high-level scientific research programs, and have sufficient funds for scientific researches. We have achieved good teaching results on provincial and state levels, published numerous high-level academic papers or monographs .We have established good international cooperative relations, hosted several national academic conferences and the Xiangshan Science Conference, and also sponsored the magazine of Journal of Paleogeography.

    Good teaching and research conditions are provided for the Geology discipline and we always attach great importance to creating better environment for educating students, pay attention to the construction of the authorizing unit of academic degrees, constantly improve and strengthen the work of educating and management of graduate students. During the process of dissertation management, integrating the key scientific research projects of the state, we emphasize on dissertation topic selection, dissertation proposal, mid-term exam, dissertation review, dissertation defense and other aspects. Overall, the Geology discipline station, with a reasonable academic team and outstanding scientific research results, has brought up a large number of high-level talents and become an important for training graduates.

  • Program Introduction

    Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering is a discipline that aims to understand the fundamental properties of oil and gas reservoir and the law of oil and gas flow in porous media, build the effective displacement system to develop the oil and gas field properly and extract the oil and gas to the ground surface economically. Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering is the most significant component in the upstream of petroleum industry.

    This discipline was established in 1953 on the basis of the previous department of petroleum engineering in Tsinghua University, which is one of the earliest major disciplines of petroleum in China and is the only subject that enters the key construction discipline list in Project 211. It was authorized to award the master's degree in 1961and doctoral degree in 1986. In 1991, the post-doctoral mobile research station of oil and natural gas engineering was established. In 2001,it was awarded the national key disciplines. After the construction supported by the ninth five-year plan, the tenth five-year plan and Project 211,this discipline was significantly improved with the remarkable achievements. The construction plan of innovative platform of superior discipline was launched in 2006. This program has become the base of the important theoretical innovation, scientific research and high-level personnel training in the oil & gas field development research areas.

    With the development in the past sixty years, especially with the support of key discipline construction in Project 211,this discipline develops a academic group with high education and academic research level, which is eligible to take on the key projects of national level. There are 61 faculty members, including 16 professors, 22 associate professors. Fifteen faculty members are qualified to supervise PhD students and forty seven of them are eligible to supervise academic and professional master student. This discipline has the key laboratory of gas energy development and utilization engineering research center supported by the Ministry of Education, the China university of petroleum (Beijing) subdivision of National energy key laboratory of coal and coal bed methane mining technology, the key laboratory of formation and development of natural gas supported by China National Petroleum Corporation, the key laboratories of reservoir stimulation, petrophysics and flow in porous medium of provincial and ministerial level, the branch office of the national center for research and development of tight oil and gas. In addition to these, it has two university-level experimental platforms in oil and gas development and enhanced oil recovery.

    Objectives

    As a doctoral student in this discipline, one shall have rigorously practical scientific attitude and academic style, positive scientific ethics, literacy and a healthy body, master the fundamental theory of petroleum development engineering broadly and study the specific knowledge deeply, understand the characteristics of the discipline, know the latest progress of this discipline, be aware of the existing problems in the current theory and technology and make innovative achievements.   • Program Introduction

    Oil and gas wells are physical and informational conduits in the exploration and development of underground oil and gas resources. The major known as oil and gas well engineering is aimed at investigating the knowledge related to the construction (drilling and completion), measurement, usage and maintenance of wells, which demands for a synthetic combination of technology and budget management. It is not only crucial throughout all the stages of the exploration and development process, but also provides significant insight for the exploitation of other subsurface resources such as methane gas or thermal energy.

    The oil and gas well engineering program at China University of Petroleum was among the earliest established petroleum subjects in China. It started the graduate program in 1961, and granted doctoral education in 1986. The program was then evaluated at the key subject at the ministry level in 1993 and selected to be the key subject at the national level in 2001. It has been ranked as the top petroleum program in the country. After years of progress, the program has now formulated four primary fields of study and possesses the laboratory of oil and gas well engineering which provides an experimental platform for the simulation of downhole operation and the investigation on rock mechanics, fluid mechanics, drilling and completion fluid chemistry. Our program also constitutes as one of the major subjects supporting the Key Laboratory of Petroleum Engineering of Ministry of Education and the State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Resources and Exploration. Meanwhile, based on the cooperation with us, PetroChina established four laboratories covering the fields of pipe string mechanics and control, wellbore stability, hydra-jet fracturing and simulation of hydraulic fracturing.

    The faculty group of the programs includes one academician (Dr. Deli Gao) of Chinese Academy of Sciences, one academician (Dr. Zhonghou Shen) of Chinese Academy of Engineering, three Yangtze River Scholars, five Winners of National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, two awardees of Yueqi Sun Energy Award, three awardees of National Talents Program, four supported by Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University, two winners of the Top 100 PhD Dissertation Nation Wide, five holders of the special government allowances of the State Council. One research group was supported by the Foundation for Innovative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2012.

  • Program Introduction

    Mechanics is the science about force, movement and their relationship. It makes researches on the macro and micro behavior of movement, deformation and flow of medium. It reveals the mechanical process and the interaction mechanisms with physical, chemical and biological processes. The main features are: (1) Mechanics is both classical and advanced elementary subject and its goal is to understand the law in the nature, life and engineering science in a quantitative and rational way; (2) Mechanics is the guidance and foundation of Engineering Science. It provides concepts and theories for opening a new field of engineering and effective methods for engineering design. It is an important driving force of science and technology innovation and development; (3) Mechanics is a highly interdisciplinary subject and it has strong capability to develop new areas of research and to produce new growth point in the discipline.

    The discipline of Mechanics in China University of Petroleum can be traced back to the establishment of teaching and research section of mechanics in the Beijing College of Petroleum in 1953. In October 1990, it was authorized to award master degree of Engineering Mechanics. In September 2001, it was admitted to enroll the undergraduate of Engineering Mechanics. In September 2003, it was authorized to award master degree of Fluid Mechanics. In 2006, it was authorized to award PhD degree of Engineering Mechanics and first-level master degree of Mechanics.

    A perfect training system has been built with characteristics of the oil industry, including bachelor of Engineering Mechanics, master of first-level Mechanics discipline and PhD of first-level Mechanics discipline. A reasonable echelon with high academic capability is formed and equipped with advanced teaching and research facilities and makes a number of significant achievements in the area of the scientific research and personnel training.

    1.  Teaching staff: a total of 35 teachers, including 17 professors, 11 doctoral supervisors, 7 associate professors and 26 teachers with PhD degrees.

    2.  Personnel training: 32students with PhD degree, 73 students with full-time master degree. At present 36 students are PhD candidates and 72 students are studying full-time for master degree.

    3.  Laboratory conditions: More than 11,000,000 RMB as accumulated investment in three years for the construction of disciplines and laboratories. At present, the laboratory area is more than 3600 square meters. During the 11th five-year plan, further 1850 square meters was added in Qingdao campus.

    The research achievement includes two National Science and Technology Progress Awards and eight ministerial scientific and technological progress awards.

    Geological Resources and Geological Engineering is the discipline studying the explorationevaluation, development and utilization of geological resources. The development of geological resources and geological engineering not only  provides the most basic material conditions for the development of the social productive forces but the work to be done in advance in industrial and agricultural construction. Thus, the discipline is closely related to social development and human survival and it takes a very important position in national economic construction.

    The program of Geological Resources and Geological Engineering in China University of Petroleum-Beijing is characterized by geological and geophysical research in petroleum exploration and development including the formation and evolution of Petroliferous basins, petroleum formation and occurrence in sedimentary basins, geology in oilfield development, geophysical exploration of petroleum(especially seismic exploration) and well logging.

    The Geological Resources and Geological Engineering discipline in our university can be traced back to the establishment of the two subjects: “Petroleum Geology and Exploration” and “Geophysical Exploration” in 1954 and the two master's programs of “Petroleum Geology and Exploration” and “Applied Geophysics” were established in 1981. The doctoral program under the same names was started in 1986. In 1998, the name of the program was changed to Geological Resources and Geological Engineering. In 2002 the program of Petroleum Geology and Exploration was approved to be the national key disciplines.

    In the sphere of Geological Engineering in our university, we have great teaching resources and perfect scientific research conditions. A series of laboratories have been set up, namely “State Key Lab of Petroleum Resources & Prospecting”, “Key Laboratory for Hydrocarbon Accumulation Mechanism, Ministry of Education”, “Key Laboratory of Earth Prospecting and Information TechnologyBeijing”. These laboratories are equipped with international advanced–level experiment and analytical instruments and computer software, which provide good conditions for learning or researches for the students.

    Objectives

    The target is to train high-level science and technology personnel who can adapt to social development of our country and meet the needs of the development of modern science and technology, of internationalization of oil industry and of all-round development.

    Chemical Engineering and Technology is a first-class subject in the category of engineering, which focuses on studying the common discipline of chemical, physical and bio-chemical process in chemical industry as well as the other industrial process. Taking Chemical Engineering subject as a guide, combining theories with practical use, this major has already become the vital engineering field of national economical construction and social development. Meanwhile, by mutually taking advantages of intersectional areas like information, biology, material, computing, resources, energy, marine and aviation, chemical engineering and technology successfully facilitates the development of cutting-edge technology.

    Started in the year of 1953 in our institute, Chemical and Technology, a key subject in Beijing, has a history of more than 60 years. The former second-class subject of Chemical Technology has developed into the State Key Subjects, and Industrial Catalysis is State Key Subject to Cultivate. There are 1 State Key Laboratory, 2 engineering centers of Ministry of Education, 2 ministerial key laboratories and 1 cross-functional institute of applied chemistry and chemical engineering. Our institute also provides with abundant and excellent faculties of currently 41 professors (including 5 awardees of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, 1 Yangtze River Scholar and 1 Chief Scientists of “973” Program) and 32 associate professors.   • Program Introduction

    The Safety Science and Engineering is a new multi-disciplinary program, combining with modern industrial production and mainly focusing on the law and mechanism of accident hazards, forecasting and identification methods for safety hazards or unsafe factors, and theories and technologies for accident prevention, risk reduction, etc.

    The Safety Science and Engineering program at China University of Petroleum, Beijing is authorized to award the first-level doctoral degree, with the national feature discipline of safety engineering, oil and gas production safety research center of State Administration of Work Safety, and the first-level safety training institutions for the state production safety. It has formed a full-time cultivation system for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in safety engineering and a continuing education system for off campus working staff in production safety training.

    The program has more than 20 full-time faculties, including 8 professors, 5 associate professors, and 7 lecturers. Out of all the faculties, there is a government special allowance expert, a member of the Academic Council of the State Council, a New Century Excellent Talent and a Beijing Science and Technology Talent.

    They formed an active team of different ages with strong  scientific research and teaching teaching abilities.

    By taking the multi-disciplinary advantage in the oil industry of China University of Petroleum, Beijing, combining with oil and gas safety science engineering technology, and taking the research and development of new theories and new technologies of oil and gas production safety as the core, the program has formed four characteristic research areas, including safety monitoring and intelligent diagnosis, oil and gas production accidents prevention and risk control, oil and gas production equipment failure analysis and integrity management and offshore oil equipment and operational safety technology and theory. The research areas cover safety science and technology problems associated with offshore and land oil and gas resources exploration, exploitation, storage, processing and refining system and other major oil and gas production processes, forming the basis for the whole process of oil and gas safety production.

    Taking the third period of 211 project as an development opportunity, the program has invested a number of internationally-advanced software and hardware experimental systems, gradually built an Oil and Gas Production Accident Prevention and Control Base Laboratory of State Safety Production Technology Support System, seven provincial laboratories or centers, such as the HSE Laboratory built with the China National Petroleum Corporation in recent years. The program has become a comprehensive oil and gas safety engineering research, high-level personnel training and academic exchange base with basic device supporting systems and modern testing technologies. It provides comprehensive technologies and personnel for the state safe energy construction and the sustainable oil and gas industry.

    Objectives

    The graduates are required to have high degree of social responsibility and humanitarian spirit, rigorous and realistic scientific attitude, excellent work ethic as well as safety science theoretical basis and in-depth expertise, including modern mathematics, information technology, oil and petrochemical technology, disaster control, safety engineering, safety protection and management etc. The graduates are also required to understand the latest progress of theoretical research and learn about the current status and development direction of safety production at home and abroad. The graduates should have strong abilities of carrying out scientific research and solving practical problems in safety production areas.     The Safety Science and Engineering is a new multi-disciplinary program, combining with modern industrial production and mainly focusing on the law and mechanism of accident hazards, forecasting and identification methods for safety hazards or unsafe factors, and theories and technologies for accident prevention, risk reduction, etc.

    The Safety Science and Engineering program at China University of Petroleum, Beijing is authorized to award the first-level doctoral degree, with the national feature discipline of safety engineering, oil and gas production safety research center of State Administration of Work Safety, and the first-level safety training institutions for the state production safety. It has formed a full-time cultivation system for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in safety engineering and a continuing education system for off campus working staff in production safety training.

    The program has more than 20 full-time faculties, including 8 professors, 5 associate professors, and 7 lecturers. Out of all the faculties, there is a government special allowance expert, a member of the Academic Council of the State Council, a New Century Excellent Talent and a Beijing Science and Technology Talent. They formed an active team of different ages with strong scientific research and teaching abilities.

       By taking the multi-disciplinary advantage in the oil industry of China University of Petroleum, Beijing, combining with oil and gas safety science engineering technology, and taking the research and development of new theories and new technologies of oil and gas production safety as the core, the program has formed four characteristic research areas, including safety monitoring and intelligent diagnosis, oil and gas production accidents prevention and risk control, oil and gas production equipment failure analysis and integrity management and offshore oil equipment and operational safety technology and theory. The research areas cover safety science and technology problems associated with offshore and land oil and gas resources exploration, exploitation, storage, processing and refining system and other major oil and gas production processes, forming the basis for the whole process of oil and gas safety production.

    Taking the third period of 211 project as an development opportunity, the program has invested a number of internationally-advanced software and hardware experimental systems, gradually built an Oil and Gas Production Accident Prevention and Control Base Laboratory of State Safety Production Technology Support System, seven provincial laboratories or centers, such as the HSE Laboratory built with the China National Petroleum Corporation in recent years. The program has become a comprehensive oil and gas safety engineering research, high-level personnel training and academic exchange base with basic device supporting systems and modern testing technologies. It provides comprehensive technologies and personnel for the state safe energy construction and the sustainable oil and gas industry.

    Objectives

  • Program Introduction

    Petroleum storage and transportation engineering includes technical areas of oil/gas gathering, transferring, and handling; long-distance transportation; storage and urban distribution, with quite broad coverage in technology, geographical region and even community. The petroleum storage and transportation facilities are not only major components of the petroleum industry, but also important infrastructures of national economy and defense, and closely related to people's daily life. Therefore they have been paid great attention by governments. This program synthetically applies theories and methodologies of mechanics, chemistry, engineering thermophysics, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, material engineering, and safety engineering, etc., to deal with the theoretical and technical problems of techniques, equipment and safety in petroleum storage and transportation systems, and furthermore develops its own systems of theory and technology by both integrating knowledge of related subjects and innovation.

    The discipline of petroleum storage and transportation engineering in CUPB was founded in 1952 in Tsinghua University. It is the earliest established subject of petroleum storage and transportation engineering and the very first one authorized to award the doctoral degree in China, and has been a leading subject listed in the National "211 Project" since the “Ninth Five-Year-Plan”. In 2002, it was promoted as a National Key Subject by the Ministry of Education. Over the past six decades, a large number of senior technical and management professionals have been cultivated for the sectors of petroleum and petrochemical industry, civil aviation, transportation and military, etc. Its distinctive and prominent areas of research covering long-distance pipeline transportation of oil and gas, gathering and transferring in oil/gas fields, system engineering and safety engineering. This subject is led by a team of active, conscientious, knowledgeable and dynamic faculty members with sound academic and age structure, which includes 9 doctor-candidate advisors, 21 master-candidate advisors. The faculty members include 10 full-time professors and 7 associate professors, among them with one recipient of National Distinguished Youth Fund, one recipient of National Outstanding Youth Fund, two advisors of the Top 100 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation, one author of the Top 100 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation, two recipients of National Natural Science Award and National Science and Technology Award , one National-Excellent- Teacher, two recipients of Special Allowance of the State Council, two Outstanding- Talents in the New Century of the Ministry of Education. There are six key-laboratories of national and provincial level, including a division of the National Engineering Laboratory for Pipeline Safety, Beijing Key Laboratory of Urban Oil & Gas Distribution Technology. In recent five years, 45 graduates were awarded doctoral degree, and 423 graduates were awarded master’s degree, among whom two’s dissertations were awarded for the Top 100 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation, and another one’s dissertation was nominated for National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation.

  • Program Introduction

    The predecessor of the Mechanical Engineering in China University of Petroleum is the original discipline of petroleum mechanical engineering founded in 1952 at department of petroleum engineering in Tsinghua University, which is the earliest established oil field mechanical discipline. The program began to recruit graduate students in 1961 and was authorized to award master's degree in 1981. It was approved as the first domestic doctoral program of petroleum mechanical engineering in 1986, the China Petroleum and Natural Gas Corporation ministerial key discipline in 1996, Beijing key discipline in 2002 as well as the postdoctoral mobile station of mechanical engineering in 2009 and was authorized to award first-level Ph.D. degree of mechanical engineering in 2011. The major of mechanical design, manufacturing and automation was awarded characteristic specialty and national characteristic specialty of Beijing in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The program is always at the forefront of oil and gas equipment and technology research. It has developed basic theories and application technologies on the discipline of oil and gas mechanical engineering and has built up a high-level academic team with international influence, strength and echelon of talents.

    The program has four research laboratories, including "Tribology and Failure Analysis Laboratory", "Offshore Oil and Gas Equipment Laboratory", "Oil and Gas Equipment Control and Testing Laboratory" and "Renewable Energy Equipment Manufacturing Laboratory". At the same time, the program strengthens research cooperation with enterprises, for example, the "Offshore Oil Drilling Equipment Joint Experiment Center" co-built with the COSL, the "Oil and Gas Energy-Saving Technology Research Center" co-built with the CNPC Energy Saving Detection Center, the "Oil Equipment Joint Laboratory" co-built with Beijing Dun Hua Petroleum Technology Ltd., and the "Jianhu Petroleum Equipment Research and Development Center" co-built with Jianhu county of Jiangsu province. In recent years, the program has been further improved with more sophisticated and advanced teaching and research infrastructures, resulting in significant improvement in personnel training quality, scientific research and innovation abilities, and social service levels. A number of achievements have been made in scientific research and personnel training areas, which make the program an important research and high-level personnel training base of oil and gas machinery and equipment with basic facilities, conditions and abilities carry out cutting-edge research project and solve major engineering problem.
